Schubert lived for his friends, enjoying not only their vibrant intellectual conversation and appreciation for the arts, but also their personal support of his career. Meetings to discuss literary works soon included musical events, or Schubertiades; informal social events which grew from Schubert's love of poetry and song, and his skilled combination of the two. Schubertiades were very popular events, whether or not the composer was present, and they remain so to this day, with regular Schubertiade festivals and series being presented all over the world.

Michael Houstoun has made a unique contribution to New Zealand music as a concert pianist and chamber musician of the highest calibre over the past thirty-five years. He performs tirelessly all over the country in recitals, with orchestras and in festivals to critical acclaim and the great delight of audiences.

The New Zealand String Quartet are this country's premier chamber ensemble. As well as performing their innovative programmes around New Zealand and teaching at the New Zealand School of Music, they have also forged a major career in the busy international chamber music field. Recent highlights include a nine concert tour of Europe including first visits to Poland and the Czech Republic and a debut concert in the prestigious Library of Congress series in Washington DC.

Join us in celebrating Chamber Music New Zealand's 60th anniversary with an evening of music by Schubert. CMNZ's subscriber survey in 2008 voted five Schubert works into the top 20 most popular chamber music pieces. Two of these all-time favourites feature in this programme; 'The Trout' Quintet and the Notturno.

An Evening with Burt Bacharach

Cancelation of the Burt Bacharach Tour.

The greatest living composer, BURT BACHARACH -- who underwent back surgery over Christmas causing his March concert dates to be rescheduled to November -- has now sadly announced he is still not able to travel to New Zealand in November to perform in his two planned concerts.

The ultra cool, Grammy award winner was rushed in to hospital to have emergency back surgery over Christmas after injuring himself while working in Italy on a new musical. It had been hoped that he would be able to resume his touring commitments after a six month postponement. However, doctors have now declared that his back has not fully healed and that he is unable to travel for an indefinite period. This has forced the music icon to cancel all touring engagements until further notice.

Dates will be rescheduled as soon as his doctors give the all clear. In the meantime, his New Zealand promoters, Pacific Entertainment have cancelled the November tour rather than inconveniencing ticket purchasers any further.

George Benson: Tribute to Nat King Cole

Presented by: Coast FM & Newstalk ZB

Legendary guitarist/vocalist revisits the music of Nat King Cole and adds some of his own amazing hits for good measure!

It takes a legend to successfully pay homage to one - and that's just what ten-time Grammy Award-winner George Benson demonstrates during his elegant performance of "An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole." has thus far, been a resounding success. The Los Angeles Times said Benson's connection with Cole was not based on simulations but on ‘the ability of two fine jazz artists to successfully, and musically, reach out to a beyond-genre audience."

Benson and his ensemble, joined by a six-piece choir and a 28-piece string orchestra conducted by Randy Waldman (conductor for Barbara Streisand, Josh Groban and others), pays tribute spanning classic Nat King Cole hits with lush orchestrations and, at times, delightful be-bop "King Cole Trio" interpretations. With precision and innovation, Benson delivers Cole favorites such as "Mona Lisa," "Stardust," "Route 66," "Looking Back," "We're Too Young," and "Nature Boy," along with all the greatest of Nat's many hits, including a bring-the-house-down performance of "Unforgettable," The show concludes with Benson's incomparable combo joining him on stage for a set of vintage Benson hits such as "Give Me The Night," "Breezin'," "Moody's Mood For Love," and "On Broadway."
